All and about food and grog

Pattaya food and hoteliers fair gets underway, 27 to 29 August.

If you have ever wondered where Thailand’s finest restaurants and hotels gain inspiration and new ideas, you might like to pop by one of the country’s most extensive food and beverage fairs, hosted in Pattaya, 27 to 29 August.

While the event clearly targets the hospitality and food trade, it has plenty to offer a discerning food lover, or critic, who likes to peep behind the scenes to see how the trade functions.

The third annual Pattaya Food & Hoteliers Expo, 2009, is arguably the largest food trade fair to blossom on the eastern seaboard. Hosted at the five-star hotel, Royal Cliff Beach Resort, it attracts suppliers of every possible item required to create mouth-watering dishes and drink concoctions.

It’s just the ticket for budding TV show chefs, or avid hobby cooks, who spend hours sourcing the latest gadgets, or menus, to try out in their kitchens.

At the expo you can mingle with hotel chefs and professionals as they study the newest equipment and compete for accolades and awards.

The fair is organised by Tourism Authority of Thailand Pattaya Office, Pattaya City, Food and Drinks Managing Association of the East, Pattaya Chefs Association, coastal provinces along the eastern seaboard and the Housewives Association of the East. The objective is to act as a platform for both buyers and sellers to network and do business.

Trade participants are mainly owners of hotels and resorts in and around Pattaya, senior and mid-management, purchasing personnel, chefs, cooks and food and beverage managers.

But local residents, tourists, and students, who are interested in hospitality and food production, will also find the show rewarding. They can enter the show as a day visitors free of charge.

The fair highlights undoubtedly the food and beverage competitions that summon chefs and bartenders to pitch their skills to win a variety of awards and prizes.

Of course, the organisers say the event will help to upgrade the skills of cooks, chefs and bartenders through these competitions, while testing the standard of their professional services.

But for the rest of us we are there to enjoy the competitions and watch contestants create fancy dishes and drinks that represent the very best in international cuisine.

We might also be able to taste a winning dish, or two, if we are not too fascinated by the endless displays of kitchenware, food and beverage gadgets and IT technology; just about everything under the sun that makes the hospitality industry tick.
