Hua Hin's Climate

Hua Hin has a tropical climate with high humidity and occasional rain. It is typically pleasant however, and can be enjoyed all year round. Generally, the best of the year though to visit Hua Hin is in the cool season from November to February but for those who like it hot then the hot season is from March to May (temperature gets up into the high 30c). The rainy season (it doesn’t rain every day) is from June to October with September being the rainiest of all. For those who don’t appreciate the rain, then be advised that the rain in Thailand usually comes in short sharp bursts. It doesn’t usually drizzle for long periods of time unlike in say England.

Hua Hin is a great place for all levels of kiteboarders. A 5 km long beach makes for great down winders, and it has the longest windy season in Thailand: from the start of November to the end of April.
The beach is relatively uncrowded and there is plenty of room to lay your kite down. In the summer months the beach opens up to around 100 meters in width during low tide. There is 30 or 40 km of coastline north and south of Hua Hin awaiting discovery.

The sea:

Chest deep at about 50m, sandy bottom.Hua Hin beach has choppy waves which get bigger as the wind increases, and a nice little shore break for shredding and boosting. Waves are smaller during the months of February to April. Some days in November to January can produce some big surf, great for the advanced kiter.

The Wind:

November to January- the northeasterly monsoons, wind ranging from 8-20 knots. Wind blows in cycles averaging 6-10 days at a time. Wind is generally strongest in the morning decreasing over the day. Wind direction is generally northerly in the morning swinging slowly around to the northeast over the day.

February to mid May - Afternoon sea breezes 12-20 knots, kicking in around 13:00, building until around 17:00 then decreasing as the sun goes down.
Mid May to October – the south westerly monsoons producing gusty offshore winds: the rainy season!
A theory that the wind is stronger over the full moon period has been thrown about by a number of people. My experience seems to suggest that the full moon can create stronger winds... but not always. A friend of mine called Roger also told me that in Hua Hin the wind always starts to blow on Fridays. So plan your trips to arrive a few days before a full moon and on a Friday if possible…!

Palm Hills Golf and Country Club

The course opened in December 1991, and is distinct in the way that it is considered the first of the "new" championship golf courses. The beautiful Palm Hills Golf and Country Club was designed by the talented "Max Wexler". In 1993 it was the principal venue for the inaugural THAILAND WORLD PRO AM golf tournament. Praise was copious; both from the competitors and the British PGA.

This is a par 72, 18-hole course. The fairways-Bermuda 419, and the greens-Tiff Turf. The course is one of the areas most beautiful, and has been remarkably well designed. The owners have gone to extreme lengths to preserve the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains. The fairways are generous, and lead to receptive green. Hazards, in the form of water, come into play on 12 of the 18 holes. Usually it does not require a great drive to overcome the obstacle. The gentle terrain of the course is the rule.

There are 2 distinct parts of this course. The out and in 9-hole are separated by both the Clubhouse and an outcropping from the nearby mountains.

Besides, the surge of intense high system remains over Thailand. This causes a decrease in temperature by 1-2 °C in the upper portion together with cool in generally and windy.

The Royal Hua Hin

Designed by O.J. Robins this course was the first in Thailand. Parkland layout with wide fairways makes this track a pleasure to play.
Green fee = THB 2000.

Founded during the reign of H.R.H. King Rama VI in 1924. The Royal Hua Hun Golf Course was commissioned by H.R.H. Prince Kampaengpetch, and designed by a Scottish railway engineer, Mr. A. O. Robins.

This is a par 72, 18-hole course. The fairways-Zoysia, and the greens-Zoysia. This golf course is less than 1 kilometers from down town Hua Hin.

The fairways are bordered by mature trees, which provide for some shady lies after a "wayward" shot. Natural hazards include raiding monkey troops from the jungle, who are noted for their ball stealing antics. Other than on the first and second holes, there is no other real water hazards.

Tropical Storm “Noul” was downgraded the tropical depression. At 4.00 a.m. today, it was centered in Cambodia or at lat 12.6 °N, long 104.2 °E, with sustained winds of 50 km/hr. It is moving west-northwestwards slowly. It is expected will to be downgraded to low pressure cell. Widely scattered rains are likely in the lower Northeast, the East and the upper South of Thailand.

It will then cover upper Thailand by the late morning today and impact on the Northeast first. This causes increasing of cloud and cooler weather respectively. At 5.30 a.m. today, Tropical Storm “Noul” in the middle South China Seas was centered about 550 km east of Hojimin City or lat 11.0 °N, long 111.9 °E , with sustained winds of 65 km/hr. It is moving westwards with a speed of 18 km/hr. The storm is expected to move inshore to lower Vietnam during 17-18 November. The eastern portion of the Northeast and the Easter of Thailand experiences more rain while the prevailing northeast monsoon over Thailand Gulf will strengthen with wave above 2 meters during 18-21 November. All ships should proceed with caution during this period.

The high pressure system over upper Thailand has weakened. These cause increasing fog are likelyin the upper country. All forms of transport should beware of poor visibilities. The northeast monsoon over the South and Thailand Gulf become weak. These cause decreasing rain and wave in the south part.
Increasing cloud is likely in the central and east part.

2008 Phuket King's Cup Regatta

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is Asia’s biggest and most popular regatta. More than a regatta, the week long event consists of great parties, great sailing and lots of fun.

Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand, the event has been held every year since during the first week of December. In 2006, the event was voted as Yatching Event of the Year at the Christofle Asia Boating Awards. This honour follows a record year in December 2006 with over 100 boats entering the event and with a record media turnout. It is the second consecutive year the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta won this prestigious award.

With the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

The high pressure system over upper Thailand begins weakening and also making the northeast monsoon over the South and Thailand Gulf becomes weak. These cause slight warm weather in the upper country. Although a decrease in rain is expected over the South, isolated heavy rain remains. Wind-wave stays rather strong in the Gulf. People in risky areas of Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Phangnga, Krabi and Trang should beware of successive rain over mountain range that possibly causes flooding and overflow during 1-2 days. All ships in the Gulf should proceed with caution during 13-14 November 2008.

Muay Thai (IPA: /muɑɪ.tʰɑɪ/, pronounced [muāitʰāi]; Thai: มวยไทย, lit. Thai Boxing) is a form of hard martial art practiced in large parts of the world, including Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries.

The art is similar to others in Southeast Asia such as: pradal serey in Cambodia, lethwei in Myanmar, tomoi in Malaysia, and Lao boxing in Laos. Muay Thai is the most popular of these form due to the size of Thailand's economy and exposure to the West. Muay Thai has a long history in Thailand and is the country's national sport. Traditional Muay Thai practiced today varies significantly from the ancient art muay boran and uses kicks and punches in a ring with gloves similar to those used in Western boxing.

Muay Thai is referred to as "The Art of the Eight Limbs", as the hands, shins, elbows, and knees are all used extensively in this art. A practitioner of Muay Thai ("nak muay") thus has the ability to execute strikes using eight "points of contact," as opposed to "two points" (fists) in Western boxing and "four points" (fists, feet) used in the primarily sport-oriented forms of martial arts.

An intense high pressure system has dominated the upper Thailand and northeast monsoon prevails over the South and the Gulf of Thailand. These cause cold weather and slight drop in temperature with windy in the upper Thailand while torrential and down pour rains in the South and strong wind-wave in the Gulf. People in risky areas of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Ranong, Phannga, Karbi, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Trang should beware of flooding condition. All ships should proceed with caution while small boats in the Gulf should keep ashore during 1-4 days(Nov 12-14, 2008).
The tropical depression “ Maysak ” (0819) near the Philippines will be downgraded and weaken to the low pressure cell in the sea.

Cold weather and 1-3 °C drops with windy in the upper Thailand. Abundant rain and heavy to very heavy rains are expected in the South. People in risky areas of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Karbi, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat should beware of flooding. Wave in the Gulf is expected 2-4 meters. All ships should proceed with caution while small boats in the Gulf should keep ashore during 1-2 days.

Loi Kratong , ลอยกระทง

Loy Krathong (or Loi Kratong, Thai ลอยกระทง) is a festival celebrated annually throughout Thailand.

Loy Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November.

"Loi" means "to float". "Krathong" is a raft about a handspan in diameter traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk (although modern-day versions use specially made bread 'flowers' and may use styrofoam), decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks etc. During the night of the full moon, many people will release a small raft like this on a river. Governmental offices, corporations and other organizations also build much bigger and more elaborate rafts, and these are often judged in contests. In addition, fireworks and beauty contests take place during the festival.
The festival probably originated in India as a Hindu festival similar to Deepavali as thanksgiving to the deity of the Ganges with floating lanterns for giving life throughout the year.


Launched Khom Fai
According to the writings of H.M. King Rama IV in 1863, the originally Brahmanical festival was adapted by Buddhists in Thailand as a ceremony to honour the original Buddha, Siddhartha Guatama. Apart from venerating the Buddha with light (the candle on the raft), the act of floating away the candle raft is symbolic of letting go of all one's grudges, anger and defilements, so that one can start life afresh on a better foot. People will also cut their fingernails and hair and add them to the raft as a symbol of letting go of the bad parts of oneself. Many Thai believe that floating a krathong will create good luck, and they do it to honor and thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha.

The beauty contests that accompany the festival are known as "Noppamas Queen Contests". According to legend, Noppamas was a consort of the Sukothai king Loethai (14th century) and she was the first to float decorated krathongs. The Loi Krathong festival is also associated with the start of vegetable carving.

The Thai tradition of Loy Kratong started off in Sukhothai, but is now celebrated throughout Thailand, with the festivities in Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya being particularly well known.
In Chiang Mai Loi Kratong is also known as "Yi Peng". Every year thousands of people assemble to float the banana-leaf krathong onto the waterways of the city, honouring the Goddess of Water. A multitude of Lanna-style hot-air lanterns (khom fai) are also launched into the air where they resemble large flocks of giant fluorescent jellyfish gracefully floating by through the skies. These are believed to help rid the locals of troubles and are also taken to decorate houses and streets.
